Since this topic comes up somewhere every few months I've decided to just throw up a blog about it that i can direct people to when it does. In fact it's currently on the forums here: http://hartists.net/forum/showthread.php?t=990

Ref. Tracing and Art Theft:

In this day and age it really comes down to 2 modes of thought. Those that use reference, copied or traced and those that don't. When EVERY artist start as a kid, they copy or trace, it's all part of learning process. Painters use reference to understand color and light, illustrators use it to understand how objects look in perspective or relation to each other... blah, blah, blah...

Heres whats real. Editors and the average guy/gal on the net that's NOT an artist, don't know or care how you get from point A. to point B. all they care about is the finished product.

If you are the type of artist that cares about tons of fav's and having people tell you how great you are or wants to work as an artist full time, then reference everything, hell trace it if you have to, whatever it takes to get the job done. That's the way it is, you've gotta get it done and the she'ople have to love it.

it's not right or wrong, it's just what it.

Now if your they type of person who loves to create art and gets more enjoyment out of figuring it out on your own and doesn't want to use reference, thats cool to, you get mad prop's in my book...but realize your gonna have a much harder road to travel... and may never end up being a full time artist.

Personally, my view has always been "learn how to do it without reference", everyone starts by using it, and even myself like 15 years ago before the internet. I used mad reference because I was still learning (and still am). A true artist never stops learning, and never stops growing... but YOU have to decide for yourself what path you want to travel. I choose to take the hard road, I love figuring it out for myself and not trying to look like everyone else. I like that my work stands out in a sea of thumbnails and people can tell it's ME from 3 feet away... infact that means more to me the fav's or comments or money.

But again, that's me. YOU have to choose for yourself what you want as an artist. It's personal, it's about whats deep down inside YOU. If you think it's ok to be hopelessly suck using photo reference that a photographer created and did all the work figuring out the lighting, getting the model, posing them, then composing the shot, cool. Your in the majority and the way of things these days is there's nothing wrong with that... I guess, because everyone who's a working professional does it, right.

If your taking YOUR OWN photos and working from them or tracing them, I can't fault you, you've done more of the work then most artist these days who surf porn sites, so more power to you.

I choose not to, thats MY choice and my opinion and I have little or no respect for people who can't do what they do without it... and nothings ever going to change that.

Realize, the choice is yours to use it or not, but your not going to change anyones opinion if they already do or don't use it. It comes down to whats inside of YOU, as an artist, your the one thats gotta look yourself in the mirror, nobody else.

There's no really right or wrong answer to this, It's simply what is.
